Summary

When the clock strikes twelve, the magic is just beginning。

Between her cruel family, the loss of her mother, and the unexpected departure of her best friend Liam, young Evelyn was forced to endure a life full of loneliness, anxiety and mistreatment。

Seven years later, seventeen-year-old Evelyn discovers that one magical night can shift everything she thought she knew。

Reunited with an all-grown-up (and oh-so-handsome) Liam, Evelyn finds herself unexpectedly introduced to her mysteriously magical grandmother that she never knew she had, and the dashing Prince Ryker, that she never thought she’d like。 Caught between love and fear, Evelyn is thrust into a world she’s never known, with new threats she never expected and new changes she doesn’t understand。

Welcome to a world made dangerous by hidden magic, where a young girl must find her place and her voice while trying to survive the trauma she’s endured most of her life。 One Iridescent Night takes you on an enchanted journey filled with hope, romance, and mystery。

How do I start talking about this? Okay, let's start at the beginning。。。 (this will be a long review, so it's in "parts" in case you don't want to read it all)~Little storytime (Jump straight to "review" if you want to ignore this):I saw an ARC of this book a while ago, and I told myself I'd get it, but then I thought better of it。。。 I'm not a big fan of Cinderella, so maybe it wasn't a good idea。 I love and hate fairytales after all。 I hate picking up ARCs that I might be disappointed in, so I How do I start talking about this? I honestly didn't expect to love this as much as I did。 I mean, more Cinderella? I'd had enough of her a long time ago and she's not my fave, and already knowing what was gonna happen, I wasn't sold much on the idea。。。 And then I started reading, and the writing style was lovely, so I kept going。 The themes discussed in the book were deep, and I felt like I needed to know more, like these characters were slowly growing on me。。。I gotta be honest, the first third of the book I was thinking "this will be a 4 star read, I feel like I've read this before, I'm missing something"。。。。 But then all the lines met in the middle, and the magic happened。 It was magic。 It was rooting for one character and then the other, it was wanting them all to find their happily ever after and falling deeper and deeper in love with all of them。 Yes, by the end, I did choose sides。 I just had to。。。 #teamliam hahaI can't wait to read more about this because the way in which Brianne tackles healthy and wholesome relationships in this book and the little discussions along the way were everything。 And I will be there in the line when the sequel comes over, no doubt!Final thoughts: We've all read so many books with amazingly strong heroines。 We've rooted for them, wanted to be them。 But Evelyn。。。 Evelyn is the real us。 Evy is a sweet girl that wants to give the best to everyone, that will sacrifice her own happiness to see those around her happy instead。 I am Evy, and that hit me harder than expected。 Because I think at some point, we have all been Evy。 We've made excuses for those that abused us in any way, tried to believe that it wasn't their fault。 We've all blamed ourselves for things that weren't our fault at all。 And I honestly can not wait to read the rest of this story and see Evelyn flourish into the strong and amazing woman I know she will become。Too many stories start too late—when the MC is already that fantastically strong female we want to be。 This is not the case。 This book gives you all the raw and painful bits, and it's everything。 So thank you Brianne for writing such a beautiful story that I think so many will fall in love with。~And I will stop writing now because this story didn't get to make me cry, but I feel like I'm about to cry now if I keep talking about it, haha。Just go and read it, this story is so important <3 。。。more

The first half of the book I read with a lump in my throat and moist eyes。 In the second half, I think I got a bit overwhelmed by the attentions of the men to the protagonist, but so did she。 The book doesn't have a good ending that ties everything up as it's a setup for a series。 There's a lot left open and uncertain。 Still, I enjoyed it。 The first half of the book I read with a lump in my throat and moist eyes。 In the second half, I think I got a bit overwhelmed by the attentions of the men to the protagonist, but so did she。 The book doesn't have a good ending that ties everything up as it's a setup for a series。 There's a lot left open and uncertain。 Still, I enjoyed it。 。。。more

As someone who adores fairytales, I was very excited when I heard about this Cinderella re-telling。 Though I’ve seen and read many versions, the story is timeless, and Brianne’s take is just enough like the original to feel familiar, but different enough to be refreshing。 The prose is fairly simplistic syntactically, but this fits well with Evy’s almost childlike innocence, and it also meant I sailed through it。 As a slow reader, it’s rare that I finish a book in a week。 But with this one, I fou As someone who adores fairytales, I was very excited when I heard about this Cinderella re-telling。 Though I’ve seen and read many versions, the story is timeless, and Brianne’s take is just enough like the original to feel familiar, but different enough to be refreshing。 The prose is fairly simplistic syntactically, but this fits well with Evy’s almost childlike innocence, and it also meant I sailed through it。 As a slow reader, it’s rare that I finish a book in a week。 But with this one, I found my eyes gliding through the words – and I kept getting that ‘just one more line’ pull as I went。 It weighs fairly heavily on the ‘telling’ side, but it’s interspersed with some beautiful descriptions and gripping action, and do you know what? Fairytales are MEANT to be 'told', so I think that lends itself to the genre very well。 A bright optimism radiates from the page, in varying levels from the three perspectives we hear from: Evy, then the two love interests Liam and Ryker。 Each with a distinct voice, vivid appearance and layered personality, I love how it really feels like we’re hearing from them directly。 There’s Evy with her wide-eyed wonder and bewilderment at the world, Liam with his grounded loyalty and deep thinking, and Ryker with his optimistic urgency and suave grandeur。 The balance between them works brilliantly for letting the story unfold from different angles, and allows us to have equal input from both boys so we’re not biased against one or the other。 Mainly at the start, there is a bit of recapping, where parts of the same events are told again from the other person’s viewpoint。 This could seem repetitive, but I actually loved being able to see what the other character was thinking in the same moment, especially when we didn’t know them so well yet。I adore Liam and Ryker’s relationship, and in many ways it’s the backbone to the story。 Other highlights are Cook and Jimmy (and their adorable connection with Evy), the morally grey intrigue of Camilla, the ethereal mystery of Chrissy, and the brilliant bluntness of the loyal Becca, who was voicing my thoughts throughout。All the characters are so vivid in my mind, with their own particular aesthetics and demeanours – a testament to how Brianne has rendered them。 The description is never overdone, but there’s just enough to make their appearances click and the world feel rich in imagery and colour。 The only two that didn’t feel fully ‘3d’ to me were Frank and Katerina – I’m always interested in the redeeming qualities and nuances of antagonists, and while we got a glimpse of that from Frank at times, I didn’t feel like we got a full insight into his mind。 There were some indications, though。 Evy's father is responsible for the majority of distressing scenes in the book, which is something that differs from the original tale。 I found these difficult - firstly, because they were so foreign and uncomfortable to me。 As such, I think Brianne is so brave to have written them, and they are handled with respect and empathy。 The other reason was that I couldn’t fathom WHY Evy's father was doing what he was doing。 But then I realised: that’s the very question Evy is asking herself。 As we hear it from her perspective, there is a lack of clarity there BECAUSE she doesn’t understand it。 Reading between the lines, we can assume he treats her poorly because in his eyes, she belongs to an old life that reminds him of her mother – something that is painful for him to comprehend。 Thus, he takes it out on Evy and puts a wall up in front of the person he used to be。 This, of course, is a big part of why we sympathise so much with Evy。Meanwhile, I couldn’t quite draw much of an analysis from Katerina。 She felt a bit caricatured and two-dimensional, and I couldn't work out what her motivations were。 But I’ll let that slide, because if there was ever a hyperbolised character in the history of fairytales, it’s Cinderella’s stepmother。 With these sorts of nods to the source material, Brianne really captured the knack of how fairytales describe minimally yet evoke much。 It’s not like there are any lengthy descriptions of décor, surroundings or clothing, but there is just enough that I was picturing it so vividly – the appearance and atmosphere of every location was so clear。 A particular highlight was the royal garden; a dreamy, magical place that added a fantastical richness to the setting。 I also thought it was brilliant that the iconic midnight-chimes scene wasn’t actually too much of a feature, and was in fact told from the prince’s perspective, which is something we don’t often see。 I’m very intrigued by the fantastical element that gradually came to light through the second half, and to see how Evy explores it。 I also can’t wait to see how she fares in her new life chapter ahead。If you’re a fan of fairytales and fantasy, and wanting a refreshing read that will have you as head-over-heels for its characters as Cinderella was when she ran away from the ball, look no further than this magical book! It is an IRIDESCENT read, one might say… 。。。more

In this book, the author offers us more than a simple rewrite of the tale of Cinderella。 She takes inspiration from it and creates a new one!¤When the clock strikes twelve, the magic is just beginning。Between her cruel family, the loss of her mother, and the unexpected departure of her best friend Liam, young Evelyn was forced to endure a life full of loneliness, anxiety and mistreatment。 Seven years later, seventeen-year-old Evelyn discovers that one magical night can shift everything she thought she knew。Reunited with an all-grown-up (and oh-so-handsome) Liam, Evelyn finds herself unexpectedly introduced to her mysteriously magical grandmother that she never knew she had, and the dashing Prince Ryker, that she never thought she’d like。 Caught between love and fear, Evelyn is thrust into a world she’s never known, with new threats she never expected and new changes she doesn’t understand。¤To begin with, I must say that the author was able to catch me into her book from the first lines。 I was sensitive to her writing style which I found quite simple, easy to read and yet poetic and beautiful。At the very beginning, I greatly recognized the Cinderella tale in this writing。 The author had added some new and interesting things, but I was wondering where we were going in the story。 Then, it wasn't long before I was surprised at this turn of events。 All of a sudden, the pace of the story picked up and I discovered a new story, quite different from the original tale。Through her text, the author will deal with several themes that I found interesting and that moved me。 There are passages about domestic abuse, intergenerational transmission, the loss of a loved one, grieving and waiting for a lost love。 Honestly, I had tears in my eyes as the text was beautiful despite the harsh themes present in this book。 The text wasn’t at all heavy on the contrary。 The author seemed to have chosen her words and sentences well so that it wouldn't block the reading and serve the story。 I admire the character of Evelyn for what she went through and the behaviors she managed to have in this story。Usually, I'm not fan of love triangles because I can't imagine them or they're too cliché, not developed enough… Well, I have to say that hasn't been the case here at all! The love triangle is very present but it’s so well done that it seems completely believable to me and I didn’t know who to choose between the two suitors。 Should Evelyn go back to her first love? Or can she afford to turn to someone new? Really, I was torn and wanted to choose both haha!¤In short, the author has made an interesting, original and surprising retelling of Cinderella! The themes that she raised through her text really appealed to me and her characters convinced me。 Although I would have liked a little more development on the universe level, I had a very pleasant reading time。 。。。more

We are so close!Personally, I have always loved the story of Cinderella。 When I was younger, I remember making my big sister watch A Cinderella Story every weekend for months because I was so in love with it。 Even now, it probably goes down in history as one of my all time favorite movies。 So basically, I have a soft spot in my heart for Cinderella retellings。 Let me go ahead and say that I am giving this book 5 STARS because I absolutely loved it。 LOVED it。 When writing a retelling of a story, things can often be predictable and it can be hard to really make it unique and your own, but I think Brianne Wik handled this challenge with grace and incredible creativity。 She truly took a timeless classic and created her own beautiful story with it。Unlike the original story, in this story, we actually see a love triangle! I know I am already gushing about this book, but I need to do it a little more。 Brianne wrote this love triangle beautifully! Most of the time when I read a love triangle, there is always one of the love interests that I like less than the other and so I ways make my mind up rather quickly on who the heroine should end up with。 For the first time, I couldn't choose! Liam and Prince Ryker are both such incredibly well written characters that I actually fell in love with both! They are both so sweet and swoon worthy, I am so happy Brianne is in charge of deciding who Evelyn will end up with and not me, because I would be asking for both! If you love beautifully heart-wrenching love triangles, YOU NEED THIS BOOK。 Evelyn is such an incredible character as well (I know, I just spent a while gushing over the boys, so I should probably talk about the heroine :P )。 To endure the treatment she received from her family, and then still be so morally strong and sweet, she is just incredible。 Brianne Wik did such a great job developing her as a character that I actually feel like I know her。 Also, if you are a musical nerd like me, there is a small Easter egg hidden in this book! When I read it, I had to ask Brianne if I was right, and I was, and now I love Brianne even more! I am genuinely so excited to see what comes next in this story and to keep up with Brianne Wik's future work as well。 I really feel like she is an incredible up and coming author! An ARC was provided to me by the author for an honest review。 。。。more

Oh my goodness, where to start? I was hooked on Evelyn's story from the very beginning。 Wik really developed her character well, and described her external and internal struggles so well。I love the twist on the Cinderella story, too。 And, *hint*, it's SO much more than the classic Cinderella story。 It explores themes like power, autonomy, love, independence, and self-belief in such a gentle, but deep way。I'm so eager to read the next instalment and see how each of the characters and their storie Oh my goodness, where to start? One Iridescent Night: A Cinderella Retelling has pieces that are true to the original fairy tale, but there are twists and turns that will keep the reader on their toes! This story is compelling and a quick read, and I especially enjoyed the relationship between Prince Ryker and Liam。 However, I wish Evelyn had more agency as a protagonist。 There were times when I cheered for her and she stood up for herself, but she often seemed like she's not the hero of her own story。 I'm really hoping she com One Iridescent Night: A Cinderella Retelling has pieces that are true to the original fairy tale, but there are twists and turns that will keep the reader on their toes! This story is compelling and a quick read, and I especially enjoyed the relationship between Prince Ryker and Liam。 However, I wish Evelyn had more agency as a protagonist。 There were times when I cheered for her and she stood up for herself, but she often seemed like she's not the hero of her own story。 I'm really hoping she comes into her own in book two!The story also ended so abruptly that I thought I was missing part of the book。 The conclusion could have been stronger, but it's clearly pushing the reader to read the sequel, which I will definitely do! 。。。more

One Iridescent Night is a sweet romance with not one but two swoon-worthy male leads and a love triangle that will keep you flipping pages and begging for more。You will be rooting for Evelyn to get her HEA from the very first chapter。 Wik keeps you wondering: WHO WILL SHE CHOOSE? If I had to pick between Liam and Ryker, I'd choose。。。 (cue loads of nail biting and stressful music)。。。 BOTH。 That's right。 I'd pick them both and work One Iridescent Night is a sweet romance with not one but two swoon-worthy male leads and a love triangle that will keep you flipping pages and begging for more。You will be rooting for Evelyn to get her HEA from the very first chapter。 Wik keeps you wondering: WHO WILL SHE CHOOSE? Thank you so much to Brianne Wik for giving me an ARC copy of this book! I had SUCH a great time reading it! Brianne Wik (@briannewik) has mood boards for each character on her Instagram, and a Q&A on her stories with each one as well! I feel like this really shows Brianne’s talent and passion as an author: each character feels like his/her own person living in the story, and not just someone plopped there to fulfill a plot element。 Reading her posts also really helped the characters come alive Thank you so much to Brianne Wik for giving me an ARC copy of this book! One Iridescent Night is a debut novel, the first book in a new trilogy, and a Cinderella retelling。 Brianne Wik did an amazing job of capturing the important moments and the essence of the original Cinderella story, while changing certain elements to add more depth。 I found the characters to be vibrant, complex, and endearing。 I truly had a blast getting caught up in the plot twists and the romance(s)。 I couldn’t put it down, and it was such a fun time! This book also reminded me A LOT of The Selection series。 It has a similar vibe and addictive quality。 If you loved that series, you should definitely read this book。 I cannot wait to read the sequel to One Iridescent Night! If this is just Brianne’s first book, I cannot wait to see what she does in the future。 5 stars! 。。。more
